there is round, the most common.square shape, oval and marquis shape which is a squished oval with points @ each end. The round is the least expensive, but it depends on any faults in the stone,a perfect stone in the correct color could cost a fortune, but a stone that seems clear to us and has the facets that still let it shine,is much less money.the larger the stone also the more expensive especially if it is a caret or more.

Diamond cuts are just the shape of the stone. eg: Princess(square), Round, Oval etc..
    As far as quality goes:
Colour is graded from D Being colourless and goes down to Z which is a yellow diamond. average diamonds are about a G to K.
Clarity is how many inclusions the stone has. they start from IF (Internally Flawless) then VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2 and I1 through to I3. An average stone is usually between VS1 to SI1.
But at the end of the day, trust your eyes. because its all about you liking what you see.

Diamond come in all different shapes but round brilliant and princess (square) are the 2 most popular. To simplify it, round is more traditional, princess more modern.

    Clarity (imperfections)
    IF,FL – Flawless
VVS1,VVS1 – flaws are difficult to find in a 10x loupe
VS1,VS1 – flaws can be seen in a 10x loupe
SI1,SI2 – flaws easily seen in 10x loupe, rarely visible
I1,I2,I3 – flaws visible to the naked eye

    Color
    D,E,F – colorless
G,H,I,J – near colorless (G and H will look colorless when mounted)
    K,L … – slight yellow tinge

    Cut Quality, Listed sometimes as
    Ideal
    Very Good
    Good
    Fair.

This is the most important factor and sometimes not described at all when buying a diamond. Some cuts do not have an Ideal.

There are also polish, symmetry grades.

There are plenty of online tutorials.

Grading is just an opinion, and everyone has one. Thats why certificates are important. Some are more highly regarded than others.

GIA, AGS are the 2 top. EGL USA is below that, they grade color softer, but is reflected in the price. IGI is another used by chain stores, it reputation is below GIA.
